Our Community
Yarrawonga is 265kms north east of Melbourne, across the Murray River from the New South Wales town of Mulwala. Yarrawonga and is well positioned within one hour’s drive of the major regional centres of Albury/Wodonga, Wangaratta and Shepparton.
Yarrawonga’s major natural attraction is Lake Mulwala. The 23 km long lake is a popular location for boating, fishing and swimming. A number of tourist operators offer cruises on the lake and river for visitors. Yarrawonga is a popular holiday destination, well known for its warm and stable climate, as well as the array of festivals held throughout the year.
Yarrawonga/Mulwala has a combined population of approximately 8000. Reflecting the importance of tourism related activities the labour force is concentrated in recreation and personal services along with retail and manufacturing.
The Local Economy
Yarrawonga is experiencing strong growth, reflecting its attractiveness as a residential location, a tourism area and an industrial location. With a large cross-border catchment area and well-developed industrial estates, Yarrawonga also offers strong future business opportunities. The key industries are described below.
Agribusiness – there is a significant horticulture activity in the area around
Yarrawonga including fruit, and grapes together with dry land grain farming.
Manufacturing – Manufacturing activity is dominated by the Australian
Defence Industries at Mulwala. Other manufacturing activity includes
industrial engineering, light management and wool processing.
Retail and Services – A strong retail strip has developed in Yarrawonga that
caters for tourist visitors, for town residents and for surrounding areas. The
cross border area with Mulwala boasts two supermarkets.
Tourism – Tourism activities centre on the lake and the registered clubs in
Mulwala. Water activities include water skiing, sailing, fishing and river
cruising. There is a 45-hole golf club in Mulwala.
